Sacred to witches is the Apple, a symbol of Samhain as well as Beltane, and a traditional offering to the spirits as they pass between the veil. Samhain and Beltane are opposite on the Wheel of the year, and these two dates are the best times for spirit workings. Onyx and black gemstones are customary for these Sabbats. Beltane, celebrated May 1st kicks off the merry month of May! This fire festival is celebrated with bonfires, feasting, dancing around the Maypole and lots of sexual energy. Also known as Mayday, this sabbat is a time of sacred fertility. The Goddess and the Greenman perform the Great Rite, sacred sexuality, in order to make the land lush and green. Because Maypoles are phallic symbols, they are erected and danced around to celebrate the masculine aspect of the Sabbat. Many Pagans also use a cauldron in their Maypole celebrations symbolizing the womb of the Goddess. Beltane.

Samhain is a time when the veil between our world and the Otherworld (or the Sídh), is thin, and divine beings, the spirits of the dead and mortals such as us can move freely between one world and the next. Samhain is seen as a time when divination is at its height and visions are most clear.

Samhain is the celebration of death. The time to connect with our ancestors who have passed on and invite them once again, into our lives. A time to embrace our heritage reminding ourselves of the connection we have with those who have gone before us into the great beyond. To celebrate their lives and the memories we hold dear.
